The NCC in India was formed through The National Cadet Corps Act of 1948. The Act was approved on July 15th, 1948. National Cadet Corps can be seen as the successor to the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC) that was established in 1942 by the British during 1942. British during 1942. In the course of World War II, the UOTC did not conform to the requirements set by the British. The result was that better plans should be created, that could help more youngsters with greater efficiency even during peacetime. A committee headed by Pandit H.N. Kunzru proposed a cadet organization to be set up in schools and colleges on a larger scale. In 1948 the National Cadet Corps Act was signed by Governor General and on July 15, 1948 The National Cadet Corps came into existence.

In the conflict in 1965 and 1971, between United States and Pakistan, NCC Cadets were third line of defense. They set up camps to help the factories that made ordinance, and supplied ammunition and weapons to the front. They they also formed patrol groups to stop enemy paratroopers. The NCC Cadets worked together with Civil Defence authorities and actively engaged in rescue operations as well as traffic management. After those wars in 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars , the NCC syllabus was updated. Instead of being the second line of defence, the NCC syllabus emphasized more on the development of leadership and officer-like characteristics. The training related to military that NCC students received was cut back and more importance was placed on other areas like social service and youth management.
